These five pages show photographs of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina.

View of Violet Canal, Violet, Louisiana. The fishing village of Violet was established in the early 20th century. Isleno fishermen settled there originally and their descendants remain ensconced in the hamlet. Violet is situated at the confluence of the Violet Canal and the Mississippi River.

Commercial fishermen residing beyond the hurricane protection levee system bring their boats to the Violet Canal, inside the levee system whenever the area is threatened by hurricanes. Many traditional Isleno fishermen remain in their boats during hurricanes. These vessels are from the fishing villages of Shell Beach, Hopedale, Yscloskey, Alluvial City, Reggio, Wood Lake and Delacroix.
